In 1917Three of Japan’s leading optical manufacturers merge to form a comprehensive, fully integrated optical company known as Nippon Kogaku K.K.

In 1925JOICO Microscope is marketedThe first microscope designed by Nikon. The trademark JOICO was from the initials of Japan Optical Industry Co., a translation of Nippon Kogaku K. K., the company’s name at the time.

In 1932NIKKOR is adopted as brand name for camera lenses. Publication of the NIKKOR trademark application was filed in July 1931, published in April 1932 and registered in December 1932.

In 1946Nikon brand name is adopted for small-sized cameras!

In 1948Nikon Model I small-sized camera is marketed. The first Nikon camera and the first product to bear the “Nikon” name. It was first sold as “Nikon,” but “Model I” was added to the product name to distinguish it from subsequent cameras.

In 1980Nikon F3 SLR camera is marketed. Introduced as the preeminent SLR camera with electronically controlled aperture-priority AE. The design by Italian designer Giugiaro had a major impact on subsequent cameras.

In 1983Nikon L35AF autofocus compact camera is marketed. Nikon’s first compact camera. It was nicknamed the “one-touch” in the United States.

In 1986Nikon Systems Inc. is established.

In 1996Nikon Field microscope is marketed! A portable stereoscopic microscope that allows “as is” observation.

In 2000 – Vision Nikon 21 business strategy is formulated; corporate philosophy is defined as “Trustworthiness and Creativity”

In 2013Compact digital camera COOLPIX A is marketed. Nikon DX format CMOS sensor is used in a COOLPIX series camera for the first time.

In 2013Nikon 1 AW1 advanced camera with interchangeable lenses is marketed. The world’s first digital camera with interchangeable lenses that is both waterproof and shockproof.

In 2015Nikon CeLL innovation Co., Ltd. is established.

Nikon is established in over 25 countries today. For almost 100 years, Nikon has been striving to not only make the best camera possible but to also make the best experience for the users of capturing those precious moments.
